Course Description
The Advanced Course on Gender and Development is designed for professionals and researchers who want to deepen their understanding of gender dynamics and the intersection of gender with development policies and programs. The course aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest research, debates, and trends in the field of gender and development.
The course will cover a range of topics, including the theoretical foundations of gender analysis, gender mainstreaming in policy and programming, gender-based violence, women’s economic empowerment, and gender-responsive budgeting. Participants will also explore the challenges and opportunities for advancing gender equality and women’s rights in various contexts, such as in conflict and post-conflict settings, in humanitarian aid, and in the private sector.
The course will draw on a range of learning methods, including lectures, case studies, discussions, and interactive exercises. Participants will be expected to critically reflect on their own experiences and apply the concepts and tools learned to their own work contexts. By the end of the course, participants will have gained a deep understanding of the complexities of gender and development, and be better equipped to design, implement and evaluate gender-responsive policies and programs.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Analyze the theoretical foundations of gender and development, including feminist theories, and apply these concepts to real-world contexts to identify gender biases and inequalities.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of gender mainstreaming policies and practices in various development sectors, and develop strategies to integrate gender into policies and programs.
- Critically analyze gender-based violence and its impact on development outcomes, and develop strategies to prevent and respond to gender-based violence in different contexts.
- Evaluate the challenges and opportunities for women’s economic empowerment in different development contexts, and identify effective strategies to promote gender equality and women’s rights in the economic sphere.
- Develop an understanding of the principles of gender-responsive budgeting, and identify practical ways to implement gender-responsive budgeting in different contexts.
- Assess the role of gender in conflict and post-conflict situations, and develop strategies to promote gender equality and women’s rights in humanitarian and post-conflict settings.

The Advanced Course on Gender and Development is targeted towards professionals, researchers, and policymakers who are working in the field of development or have an interest in gender issues. The course is ideal for individuals who want to deepen their understanding of the intersection of gender with development policies and programs, and want to gain practical skills for integrating gender into their work. Participants may come from a range of sectors, including government, non-governmental organizations, academia, and the private sector.
Technical Requirement
To participate in this online course, participants will need a reliable internet connection and a computer, laptop, or mobile device. The course will be hosted on Global Human Rights Leadership Training Institute platform, which participants will access using their web browser. The platform is compatible with most modern web browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari. Additional technology requirements will be communicated to participants in advance if necessary.
Award of the Certificates
Participants, who successfully complete all course requirements, including assignments and assessments, will be awarded a certificate of completion in Advanced Certificate Course on Gender and Development (AGDT). The certificate will highlight the skills and knowledge gained in the course, providing valuable recognition of the participant’s achievements.
Course Fee
The course fee for is US$300. Limited partial scholarships are available for participants from developing countries who demonstrate financial need. Details on the partial scholarship application process will be provided upon registration.
Duration/Time Commitment
This Advanced course on Gender and Development is designed to be flexible for busy professionals. The course has duration of 50 hours, which can be completed over a period of four (4) weeks. Participants will have access to the course materials and assignments 24/7 and can complete the coursework at their own pace. Additionally, there is a possibility of an extension if required. This flexibility allows participants to balance their work and personal commitments while still benefiting from the course.
